Calico is seeking a highly motivated and experienced Principal Investigator, Cardiovascular Research to lead laboratory investigations and drug development efforts focused on cardiovascular diseases during aging. This critical role will involve designing and executing research strategies to identify and validate novel drug targets for age-related cardiovascular conditions. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in cardiovascular biology, aging research, target identification and validation, and drug discovery. Experience with in vivo and in vitro models of cardiovascular disease and aging is highly desirable. This position offers the opportunity to contribute directly to the development of therapeutics aimed at improving cardiovascular healthspan.
Position Responsibilities:
- Lead and mentor a group of talented scientists as a laboratory team focused on cardiovascular diseases of aging aimed at drug target identification and validation
- Develop and execute innovative research strategies to identify and validate novel drug targets
- Oversee the design and implementation of in vitro and in vivo studies for proof of concept for new therapeutics
- Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including medicinal chemistry, biology, and translational research, to advance drug discovery programs
- Stay abreast of the latest scientific advancements in cardiovascular disease and aging biology and related advances in drug discovery
- Represent the company at scientific conferences and meetings
Position Requirements:
- MD/PhD preferred, MD or PhD in molecular biology, biochemistry, disease pathogenesis, or a related field, with emphasis on the mechanisms of cardiovascular or other aging-related diseases
- Rising or proven leader with 5-10 years of experience in cardiovascular research, with a track record of success in cutting edge discoveries and impactful publications and/or patents and national or international recognition
- Extensive knowledge of cardiovascular biology and aging-related disease mechanisms
- Experience with in vitro and in vivo cardiovascular disease model systems
- Creative and critical thinking, excellent communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team in a fast-paced environment
- Creative and critical thinking skills
- Must be willing to work onsite five days a week
Nice to Have:
- Understanding of drug discovery processes, including target identification, assay development, high-throughput screening, and lead optimization
- Familiarity with various “-omics” technologies (genomics, proteomics, metabolomics)
- Experience with in vivo models of aging and age-related diseases
The estimated base salary range for this role is $220,000 – $241,000. Actual pay will be based on a number of factors including experience and qualifications. This position is also eligible for two annual cash bonuses.
